Tournament rules director Lord Hunt today threw out an application by Magpie defender Mal Shivnan to use a softball bat in place of his driver in next week’s JWMGC.Apparently “Blue-boy” got a feel for the bat during a late night faecal incident in Queenstown some years ago and now prefers the full wood in place of the wood head.
Hunt said it might seem unlikely to provide any advantage for the Ngati Porou high handicapper but that any unusual gimmicks were frowned upon at the JWMGC.“It’s similar to the case we had a few years back with John Wikstromand his custom-made ankle supports so I felt as if a precedent has been set.
In other related news Auckland Falcon Alistair Ross has been given the green light to take his Range Rover on course in place of a cart.
In making the ruling Hunt said “I know it might look as if I’m favouring one of the Falcon flock but the reality is Cat hasn’t had the chance to take his Rangey off-road as yet so this is a good opportunity to test the beast out.
Ross was last seen heading to Beaurepaires for a new set of sand tyres to deal with the amount of time he is likely to spend in the bunkers.
Swans star player Sir Gary Traill’s converted laz-y-boy cart has also passed scrutinising for use on the Northland links.
